My idea of what constitutes good reality television can be found in the following short video - it features a guy who it has to be said, has a somewhat positive mental attitude, (reminds me of myself in some instances) - enjoy the video, its awesome!

Lest We Forget - Anzac Day

The 25th of April 2013 marks the 98th anniversary of Anzac Day in commemoration of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War when they stormed the  Gallipoli  peninsula in Turkey.

The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps whose soldiers were known as Anzacs.
Lest We Forget.

Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions for the people of both Australia and New Zealand, a rare instance when  two sovereign countries not only share the same remembrance day, but making reference to both countries in its name.

Today, 98 years on - the spirit of Anzac, with its human qualities of courage, friendship and sacrifice continue to have a profound meaning and exemplifies as much relevance for the Australian / New Zealand people's  sense of national identity today, as it did back in 1915.

On Anzac Day, ceremonies are held in towns and cities across Australia and New Zealand  to acknowledge the service of  those veterans and everyone in the Australian and New Zealand military who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations..

'Rainbow Across My Electorate' - Maurice Williamson

The following video appeared on my news feed on Facebook , filmed during the third reading of the marriage equality bill, a proposal to amend the 1955 Marriage Act allowing same-sex couples to marry each other in New Zealand, it features a somewhat jovial MP by the name of Maurice Williamson who was very succinct in delivering his message - enjoy the video – its superb viewing .

'Rainbow Across My Electorate'

As a matter of record - 77 of 121 members of New Zealand’s Parliament voted in favor of the amendment, making it the 13th nation to legalize gay marriage and the first nation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Exemplifying The True Virtues A Sporting Rivalry

Two years ago I published my thoughts on the terrible events which took place on April 15th 1989 at a football match played at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at which 96 individuals tragically lost their lives due to the negligence of the south Yorkshire police.

Yesterday at a memorial held at the home of Liverpool football club the chairman of their greatest rivals Everton spoke with great dignity and in  a manner which should exemplify the true virtues of a sporting rivalry without the sectarian bile which the fans of the two prominent football clubs in Glasgow are equally guilty of.
Massive respect sir.

Margaret Thatcher 1925 - 2013

The inevitable passing of Baroness Thatcher solemnly marks the conclusion of a Prime Minister who was both loathed and loved with equal passion among vast swathes of British society.
Margaret Thatcher 1925- 2013

There is no doubt whatsoever that Lady Thatcher was the most divisive figure ever to reside in number 10, she was a conviction politician who (regardless of the human cost endured by years on the scrapheap) never ever flinched in her determination to see her policies come to fruition, so whilst I can admire her steely resolve, I just don’t buy into the notion that she somehow saved the “country” as embodied by the current PM David Cameron - looking at the problems besetting the country today (The UK) most of which are directly linked to her tenure as PM, the term Pyrrhic Victory springs to mind.

That notwithstanding today is not a day to decry the Prime Minister-ship of Lady Thatcher, today she gets to meet her maker and it is to him she will have to explain herself to, it just saddens me that so many people are genuinely happy she has passed on – seriously folks, it’s time we all moved on .

One Man In The Name Of Love - They Could Not Take Your Pride.

 Martin Luther King Jr 1929-1968

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!”
The Rev Martin Luther King's was shot and killed (45 Years ago today) at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee,  the day after he made this speech in April of 1968 - how prophetic !

One Careful Owner - Not hardly

Anyone reading the Sunday morning papers (see here) could not possibly miss the photograph of a red Audi TT car embedded into a residential home and not have a wry wee smile on their face.
One Careful Owner - Not Hardly !

Unfortunately  the young driver of the car was seriously hurt and had to be cut from the wreckage by firefighters after the 1:45 am accident, one can only hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

He apparently lost control when he mounted the pavement, careering through a hedge flying over two parked cars in the driveway and crashing his pride and joy through the living room window, wedging his car some four feet off the ground.

A spokesman for Suffolk Police was quoted as saying :
"Collision investigators will be at the scene today as we try to ascertain exactly what has occurred - At this early stage we could not speculate as to what has caused the crash."
Seriously ? .. Asks the Big Dollop.

Punxsutawney Phil Indicted

The Big Dollop had a wee chuckle to himself on reading an article concerning a previous subject within the pages of my humble blog, that subject being a rodent by the name of Punxsutawney Phil. (see here)

Punxsutawney Phil

Punxsutawney Phil finds himself indicted on a charge of misleading the American people after he incorrectly forecast that spring would arrive early – a forecast which according to prosecutors in Butler County Ohio amounted to a felony "Against the peace and dignity of the state of Ohio".

With temperatures in Ohio remaining rather low for March and with a storm due on Sunday which could bring several inches of snow with it, perhaps the tongue-in-cheek prosecutors in Ohio's Butler County may just have a point.

Buisness As Usual ?

To the casual reader of my humble blog it would appear that recently I have been somewhat intense in my critique of the Catholic Church, therefore if I could beg your indulgence one more time if I use it as a “subject” for my two cents worth of opinion.

Cardinal Napier of South Africa

Reading various newspapers this morning one story which caught my attention was one concerning a South African Cardinal who is quoted as saying “Paedophilia is a psychological illness and not "a criminal condition".

The Catholic Archbishop of Durban, Wilfrid Fox Napier, said that people who were abused as children and became paedophiles were not criminally responsible for their actions in the same way as somebody "who chooses to do something like that".

With all due respect your eminence, those who would commit these awful crimes are  obviously sick in the head and are to be held beneath contempt- they need to be separated from society at large, not moved on under a cloak of deniable plausibility in order to protect the "Reputation and Good Name" of your church.

Is it any wonder the Catholic Church is still in deep shit  has been the recipient of much criticism concerning decade old allegations of child abuse from some members of its clergy when it has idiots in the mold of Cardinal Napier among its hierarchy.

I would like to think the Cardinal is being somewhat naïve in his opinion and give him the benefit of the doubt when he says pedophilia is a disease and like alcoholism is somehow treatable, sorry your eminence but in my humble opinion, the only treatment for pedophilia is either castration or a bullet to the head.

It will be interesting to see what the reaction his Holiness Pope Francis will have to the remarks made by Cardinal Napier, if he doesn't condemn his Cardinal's words outright and order him to retract them publicly then I would surmise that it will be business as usual at the Vatican.

Time will tell.
